Once a fulbrighter, always a fulbrighter
The experience and the people you meet along the way make The Fulbright Program the most diverse, prestigious, and rewarding international educational exchange program in the world! I had the pleasure to represent Morocco during the mid-year conference held in Washington D.C. Throughout the four days, Fulbright FLTAs around the U.S. participated in and attended different presentations, workshops, and speeches that highlighted topics related to language teaching and cultural exchange. The first day of our arrival at the hotel where we were to join the four days conference was amazing. During check-in at the lobby, you could meet Fulbrighters coming from all around the world. I got the chance to meet a few from India, Tanzania, Turkey, Tunisia, France, and many other countries. Everybody got along very well and we were already discussing plans and activities to do during our stay in DC.
The second day was a series of presentations on different topics related to teaching languages and concluded with a preparation for the cultural fair. It was also a chance to discuss and learn about teaching pronunciation and best practices for interactive learning. Using Psycholinguistics to Teach Pronunciation was the first presentation given by Dr. Robin C. Barr who has been teaching linguistics at American University since 1996. The presentation was engaging and very insightful on the topic of psycholinguistics. The afternoon presentations were based on the selection of every FLTA and we were sent into breakout rooms for each of the presentations. The ones I attended were “Best Practices for Interactive Learning” and “Get them Speaking! How to Motivate Learners Through Helpful Self-Assessment”. The first one was a discussion on how to engage students and make the teaching practices more student-centered and fun.
I participated by sharing my experience using activities that target students’ critical thinking skills and mentioned my reading of the book Where Great Teaching Begins by Anne R. Reeves. The second presentation was as interesting and interactive as well. Dr. Paula Winke, who is a professor at Michigan State University, talked about two classroom assessments that can be used repeatedly in our language classrooms to measure our students’ growth in speaking over time.
The third day was a chance for selected FLTAs to present their topics of choice. I was in group 2 which included presentations by the FLTAs; Ms. Paula Ferrer from Argentina, Gulcan Irmak Aslanoglu from Turkey, Soumaia Abunada from Palestine, and Maico Demi Aperocho from the Philippines. The FLTAs presented language teaching methods and best practices that they have found most effective in teaching their language. The presentations were as follows;
1-Striking the class with the use of authentic materials! | Paula Ferrer | Argentina, Spanish
2. Re-Imagining Canon for Class: Teaching Language Through Fandoms | Gulcan Irmak Aslanoglu | Turkey, Turkish
3. Photovoice and Dialogues: Experiences and Voices for Learners’ Filipinoness | Maico Demi Aperocho | Philippines, Tagalog
4. Culture Anchors | Somaia Abunada | Palestine, Arabic
The conference concluded with the cultural fair event that hosted more than 20 selected countries showcasing their culture and language. I have seized the opportunity to learn about different countries and to experience and try some of their cultural accessories. It was an opportunity to connect with and make new friends and that falls within the mission of the Fulbright Program.
